It was a beautiful ends for this year 2016 ! Our application in virtual reality (VR) “Artist’s Studio Utrillo Valadon in Montmartre, Paris”, in co-production with Arforia and the “Musée de Montmartre”, has just been referenced on the VIVEPORT platform ! Available for free download in 32 countries, since Thursday December 22nd, it was for us such a wonderful gift for Christmas !

Approved by the professionals and the public, this first immersive experience of visit received this autumn, the 1st prize in the category Art and Culture at the 360 FILM FESTIVAL. It was rewarded for “the creative audacity of using photogrammetry to reproduce a real artistic space “. Since its inception, we have exhibited it in trade fairs and forums all around the world. Back on an incredible year!

The little history of the VR application Artist’s Studio Utrillo Valadon in Montmartre, Paris

From the 3D modeling of real objects, to their integration in a virtual environment, Art of Corner is specialized in a high-precision photographic rendering. We produce VR content with a unique user experience and we have chosen to put our expertise and technology at the service of Art and Culture. We have chosen to implement an innovative approach of digitization and preservation projects for Heritage. In this way, we support democratization and accessibility to culture.

From meetings to discussions, we had the chance to meet Utrillo and Valadon’s rights holders, as well as with the museum of Montmartre. With their agreement, we decided to reconstitute virtually the artists’ workshop on the basis of the restitution proposed by the Musée Montmartre since October 2014. Our goal was to make it accessible to everyone and to allow everyone to visit it (almost) in real life.

To make this experience as realistic and qualitative as possible, we used photogrammetry. This technique is used to create ultra-realistic 3D models from photos of real objects. And thanks to the HTC Vive Virtual Reality headsets and the Oculus RIFT, the user is able to fully immerse themselves.

From the artist’s studio to the virtual museum

From October 16, 2015 to March 13, 2016, a temporary exhibition entitled “Maurice Utrillo, Suzanne Valadon and André Utter at Workshop 12, rue Cortot: 1912-1926” was held at the Musée Montmartre. This exhibition was presenting Suzanne Valadon and his son Maurice Utrillo (and their reconstituted studio-apartment) but also about another painter living and creating beside them, André Utter. He was Utrillo ‘s best friend of and companion of Valadon. Soon nicknamed the “infernal trio”, they will mark their time, Montmartre and the history of art. Tthrough 150 works of the trio created on the time of this cohabitation, the exhibition retraced their artistic and intimate lives.

Inspired by this temporary exhibition, we integrated the artist’s studio reconstruction in a prototype of a virtual museum dedicated to the painters Maurice Utrillo and Suzanne Valadon. So in this virtual space, you can contemplate their paintings in 3D, watch a TV documentary dedicated to them (already broadcast on France 5), and of course be immersed in their artist studio in Montmartre. This virtual museum opens up an infinite field of application in the field of heritage.

From the digital creation to the hybridization of the forms, a specific script was developed to this project. In this transmedia visit, all types of content integrate and re-adapt into new formats, Creating a playful course tailored for each user, whatever his profile : VR, gaming, animation and interactivity mingle.

Through this project, we put forward real innovations :

  • 3D: by mastering the 3D scanning chain for objects but also for places
  • Museographic : by the transfer of the rules of the scenography of the real to the virtual
  • Videos : with the integration of videos
  • VR : with the functions of the latest generation VR including a real multiplayer mode, and a real interactivity thanks to the joysticks able to simulate the gripping of virtual object.

From Montmartre to Beijing

After several weeks of shooting, retouching and editing, we were able, in June 2016, to have our prototype tested for the first time to the public. Since then, we have had the chance to participate in many touristic and cultural events around the world to present it. Have a look for yourself !
